Based in Valencia, Blanca works as a freelance designer of sets/costumes and environments for theatre, dance, opera and film. She arrived at set design from a background of fine arts, installation and video art. Before becoming a designer, she studied fine arts at Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain) and at Hochshule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg (Germany) graduating in 2007.
In 2009 she was selected to study theatre design at New York University TISCH School of the Arts where she obtained her Master’s Degree in 2012. As a New York University graduate student, Blanca won the “Oliver Smith American Design Award” for her excellency in theatre design.
In 2017, along with writer and stage director María Salguero, she founded the company Colectivo Miss Panamá. Both together opened Nave Miss Panamá in El Cabanyal, Valencia. A space dedicated to theater companies and scenic art artists to collaborate together and search new scenic languages.
Comfortable working in different kinds of performance, from opera to plays, to film and work that eschews these categories. Her work and process are defined by an intense curiosity matched with a shrewd visual sensibility. She views the theatre less as entertainment or a job, and more as a forum in which to learn about the world, to ask big questions and challenge assumptions.
Blanca has worked as an assistant scenic designer for many years for designers such as Paul Steinberg, Andrew Lieberman, Marsha Ginsberg, Doug Fitch, Chloe Lamford and Lizzie Clachan. Since 2014 she works as an associate scenic designer at Festival d’Art Lyrique Aix-en-Provence in France.
